The British Gas Energy Trust has announced the impact of its White Goods Scheme, which has supported an estimated 19,435 people across England, Wales and Scotland since launching in 2023. 

Funded through more than £2.4 million of investment from British Gas, the scheme addresses a critical but often overlooked aspect of fuel poverty: access to essential household appliances such as washing machines, fridge freezers and cookers. 

Since its launch, the scheme has helped thousands of households maintain safe, stable and healthy homes by providing practical support that improves quality of life and reduces financial pressure. 

The initiative began as a pilot in England and Wales in December 2023 before expanding nationally and, in 2025, extending into Scotland through additional funding from British Gas. It’s delivered through a network of 48 trusted organisations including charities, community groups and advice agencies.

These partners identify households in need, provide holistic support and facilitate access to appliances, ensuring assistance reaches some of the most vulnerable communities across Britain. 

Over the course of the programme the scheme has distributed: 

  • 2,069 washing machines 
  • 1,727 fridge freezers 
  • 1,351 electric cookers 
  • 194 under-counter fridges 
  • 176 under-counter freezers 
  • 147 tumble dryers for households with additional laundering needs
