People can fall into energy debt easily, whether it’s a change in circumstances like losing a job, not being able to work because of a health issue or living in a home with inefficient heating systems.
Debt can rack up quickly and feel like a heavy burden. But the good news is that there is a way through it.

Talk to Your Energy Provider
If you’re starting to worry about your balance, your first step should be to contact your energy supplier as soon as possible. While it’s tempting to put it off, opening a dialogue early is the most effective way to prevent debt from escalating.
Suppliers have a formal responsibility to support customers in financial distress. Depending on your situation, they may be able to:
- Set up a repayment plan: This allows you to pay off your arrears in smaller, manageable chunks based on what you can realistically afford.
- Provide more time to pay: If you have temporary issues, they may offer a short-term grace period.
- Review your payments: They can check if your current Direct Debit accurately reflects your actual usage.
- Clear energy debts: If the debt is unmanageable and you are classed as vulnerable, they may be able to write it off completely.
You can find the direct contact details for most major providers via the Smart Energy GB website, making it easier to start that conversation today.
If you are a British Gas customer, our British Gas Energy Support Fund can help clear debts of up to £2,000.
