Unpaid Energy Bills

Rising energy costs have left many households across the UK struggling to keep up with bills. If people fall behind on payments, the situation can become stressful quickly.

Recognising the support available and understanding how to deal with the situation is key. However, it’s important to note that most support does not kick in automatically so it’s important to not bury your head in the sand. By seeking help, you can regain control of your issues.

This article takes a look at some of the options available.

Contact Your Supplier

Energy suppliers have a duty to support their customers, but they can’t help you if they don’t know what’s happening. They may be able to offer repayment plans, temporary payment breaks, reduced instalments and emergency credit. It’s important to speak to them first, to see what help might be available. Read our blog about hardship funds to find out more.

Emergency or Temporary Credit

If you’re on a prepayment meter and cannot afford to top it up, contact your energy supplier immediately to get temporary credit. This is sometimes called ‘additional support credit’. You may also be able get fuel vouchers via your local council, Citizens Advice or food bank.

If you’re on a normal meter or a smart meter, your energy provider must give you advance warning before cutting you off.

If you’re vulnerable, for example are elderly, have a disability or a health condition, you should sign up for your supplier’s Priority Services Register which could provide you with protection against disconnection.

Crisis Grants

Many energy suppliers offer their own grants for customers who are in energy debt or are struggling to pay their bills. It’s important to speak to them first, to see what help might be available.

If you’re in Scotland and are at risk of not being able to heat your home, you can apply for a crisis grant within the Scottish Welfare Fund. There’s a similar emergency grant available for people in Wales under the Discretionary Assistance Fund scheme. In both cases, the amount of support varies and depends on eligibility criteria.

Get Help to Clear Your Debt

British Gas Energy Trust’s Individuals and Families Fund can help clear energy debts of up to £1,700 to prepayment meters, regardless of your supplier.

You must live in England, Scotland or Wales and have received money advice within the last six months. Further help can be found from charities, with many funded by British Gas Energy Trust to carry out such work. Take a look at our list of Local Advice Centres to view support in your area.
