Many households are unaware that they may be able to reduce their essential household bills through discounted tariffs offered by water, phone and broadband providers.
These reduced-cost options, often known as social tariffs, are designed to help people on lower incomes or certain benefits access vital services at a more affordable price. Unlike promotional deals, social tariffs provide the same service at a lower cost for those who may otherwise struggle to keep up with payments.
What are Social Tariffs?
Social tariffs are discounted packages offered by many water, broadband and phone providers to customers who receive qualifying benefits, such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit. Eligibility criteria vary between providers, but in most cases, you will need to contact your supplier directly and provide evidence of the benefits you receive.
Help With Broadband and Phone Bills
Many broadband and phone providers offer social tariffs to eligible customers. These can provide the same service at a significantly lower monthly cost.
If your provider offers a social tariff and you qualify, you can usually switch to it without paying any additional fees. In many cases, you can move onto the discounted tariff even if you are still within your existing contract.

Help With Water Bills
Water companies across England and Wales offer social tariff schemes, although the level of support and eligibility requirements differ between providers.
If you’re finding it difficult to pay your water bill, contact your water company to ask about any discounted tariffs, payment support schemes or hardship assistance that may be available.
Customers in Scotland and Northern Ireland may have access to different forms of support and should contact their water provider or local advice services for guidance.
Support With Energy Bills
Energy suppliers offer a different range of support options for customers who are struggling to pay. These may include:
- Affordable repayment plans
- Hardship funds and grants
- Debt write-off schemes
- Energy efficiency support
- Emergency credit or payment assistance
If you are worried about your energy bills, contact your supplier as early as possible. Many suppliers offer repayment plans, grants and other support, but you may only be able to access these schemes if you tell them that you are experiencing financial difficulties.
