Funded organisations successful at national awards

Two organisations funded by British Gas Energy Trust have picked up prestigious awards recognising their efforts in shaping the future of community energy.

The Community Energy England Awards brought together individuals, organisations, and initiatives that are making significant contributions to the advancement of sustainable and locally driven energy solutions.

With various categories that cover a wide range of achievements, the event showcased the diverse efforts and successes within the sector.

Exeter Community Energy were the big winners from the event, picking up two awards – the Progress in Expansion Award and the Large Community Energy Organisation of the Year Award.

The charity picked up their awards for their significant growth over the last few years, their retrofitting advice and their strategic partnership work.

Since 2020, the workforce has grown from a team of six to a team of 41 now, alongside a turnover growth of £92,000 to £908,000.

The team are supporting more people than ever before in their area, and Tara Bowers, Co-CEO at Exeter Community Energy, believes the recognition is down to the hard work and dedication of team members.

Tara said:

“It’s amazing. We had our Christmas meal [in December]. I just had to say a few words and all I could say is that we were the best in the country! It’s recognition of the hard work and dedication of our team. Everyone is committed to supporting local residents as well as reducing carbon emissions.

“If we didn’t do it, I’m not sure anyone else would in the local area. We have an important part to play and it’s nice to be recognised as the go-to experts.”

Kate Meakin, Director at Energise Sussex Coast – another organisation funded by British Gas Energy Trust – picked up the individual Community Energy Champion award at the same event.

Kate scooped the award for her outstanding contribution to the advancement of the community energy sector and recognised her strategic leadership and compassionate approach in challenging times.

On winning the award, Kate said:

“It was a big compliment to even be nominated for the award. It was a really nice surprise.

“Winning was a good validation of all the work we’ve done as an organisation recently. We’ve had a good few years growing the organisation so it was a nice moment to reflect on how far we’ve come.

“It was also a really good opportunity to see all the other providers at the event and to hear about all the good work they’ve been doing across the country.”

Emma Bridge, Chief Executive at Community Energy England, said:

“Congratulations to all the finalists and winners, whose remarkable work is driving the continued growth, resilience, and innovation of our sector.

The breadth and quality of this year’s shortlisted submissions are a testament to the commitment and ingenuity of the individuals and organisations we work alongside.”
