In October 2025, Children First was awarded funding from British Gas Energy Trust (the Trust) to deliver tailored money and energy advice to families in Inverclyde. Six months on, the pilot project has made a meaningful difference to families who are struggling with high living costs and energy bills.

Working closely with the local authority, the service is reaching families early and providing practical help before financial pressures escalate into crisis. Alongside intensive face-to-face support, families can utilise Children First’s support line which provides emotional, financial and practical help to parents and carers across Scotland.

As part of the Trust’s partnership with Children First, families from across Scotland can also access essential white goods. These items are making a real difference to daily life and helping to improve living conditions whilst reducing energy use. So far, 475 white goods have been ordered for households who needed them most, with washing machines and fridge/freezers making up the largest proportion; ensuring families can avoid costly laundrettes, store food safely, and maintain a comfortable and safe home.

Laura* contacted Children First as she had been struggling to provide for her three children and two nephews. Her oven had recently broken and she couldn’t afford to replace it. The cost of the families food shop increased because they were limited by what they could cook. Through the partnership, Laura was able to get a new oven. “Thank you so much, it’s great to be able to cook again and we are loving how good it is.” said Laura “This is changing our lives, the stress that has been lifted is huge.”

Jess* was also able to get a new cooker for her and her daughter’s new home, after six months of living in temporary accommodation. Jess said: “I got the cooker yesterday and it was a lifesaver, thank you.”

Linda Jardine, Director of Children and Families Services at Children First said: “The funding from British Gas Energy Trust has made an immediate life-changing difference to children and families across Scotland through the provision of essential household goods.

“The face-to-face support we’re able to offer families in Inverclyde means they are able to reduce their energy bills and living costs so that they can keep their children warm and well. We can’t thank British Gas Energy Trust enough for their incredible support.”

Children First’s support line is available 365 days a year and is free to call on 08000 28 22 33 or start a webchat at www.childrenfirst.org.uk/supportline.
