Laurie Lee

Position: Trustee
Laurie is the Interim Chief Executive of the Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation, which works to reduce health inequalities in south London and to support the patients and staff of the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS hospitals.
Laurie is a Board member of a fintech social enterprise, Girls First Finance, which is expanding access for adolescent girls and young women around the world to tertiary education and training, by reducing their sexual exploitation and providing affordable loans.
He was the Chief Executive of CARE International UK, one of the UK’s major humanitarian and global poverty charities, working in 100 countries around the world, responding to emergencies and supporting women’s social, economic and political equality. Laurie previously worked for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which works to reduce global health inequality and poverty around the world, and contributed to the elimination of wild polio in Africa. Prior to 2008, Laurie was a senior civil servant in the UK Government, mainly in the Department for International Development (DFID), in which his last position was Deputy Director and Head of the International Trade Department. From 2004 to 2006 Laurie served as Private Secretary and Foreign Policy Adviser on Africa to the UK Prime Minister, helping to negotiate some of the key Gleneagles agreements on debt, aid and HIV and AIDS reached during the UK’s presidency of the G8 in 2005, during Make Poverty History.
