The Form

If you would like to apply for help you must fill in the Trust's online application form. We strongly recommend that you seek money advice before applying to the Trust in order to increase your chance of a successful application. When filling in the application form, it is very important that you:

  • Answer all questions truthfully and provide explanations where required. If you do not provide this information, your application is likely to be assessed as a ‘weak case’ and is unlikely to be successful.
  • Ensure you provide all the necessary supporting evidence (detailed in the Supporting Evidence Section of the application form) when you submit your application. Your application cannot begin to be assessed until all your supporting documentation is received. If supporting evidence is missing, we will have to write to you for this, which will delay the assessment process and take longer for the Trust to come to a decision. Supporting evidence can be uploaded electronically e.g. photos, PDF at point of submission, or shortly afterwards. Evidence can also be emailed to us at BritishGasEnergyTrust@lets-talk.online or sent via the Trust's freepost address FREEPOST BRITISH GAS ENERGY TRUST (no stamp required).

If you are asking for a grant to clear your gas and / or electricity debt you must:

  • If the debt is not with British Gas, provide a copy of your most recent bill showing actual usage (i.e. not an estimated bill). This helps us identify the total amount you owe.
  • If the debt is with British Gas provide a current meter read as part of your application, preferably taken on the day you submit your application.

Difficulty completing?

If you think you might have difficulty completing an application form, the Trust funds Local Advisers within a number of agencies based in England, Scotland and Wales. The Advisers can help you with fuel debt advice, budgeting / money advice and may be able to help you submit an application to the Trust. There is a link on the right of this page which provides a list of local advisers.

Alternatively there are many local advice centres, e.g. Citizens Advice, that may be able to help.

The Trust automatically acknowledges receipt of all applications. If we require further information to assess your application we will request this and you are given 30 days to provide the required information. If you do not reply within the 30 days, your application will be closed as we assume you no longer want to apply. If you have difficulty obtaining the information needed to send to the Trust (for example if you are waiting for information from the DWP) you should inform the Trust before the four weeks is up. The Trust can then give you more time to send in what is needed.
